This study explores the influence of Taoism’s core philosophical concept of ‘Wu Wei’ (non-action) on the technical ideals and training philosophy of Karate. The research analyzes the connection focusing on the ‘paradox of strength’—where greater power emerges from natural movement rather than intentional force—and the state of absorption in martial arts practice and application known as ‘Mushin’ (no-mind). The findings reveal that Karate’s power generation principles, which utilize increased speed through relaxation and the natural mechanical connection of the entire body, show deep connections with the Taoist wisdom of achieving greater effects by ‘not forcing.’ Furthermore, the state of ‘Mushin’ can be interpreted as the experiential realm of ‘Wu Wei,’ where embodied techniques emerge spontaneously without being constrained by thoughts or emotions. This study is significant in presenting the profound insights that Taoist philosophy provides in understanding and practicing Karate as a ‘Way’ (Do).
