This study provides an overview of the Swiss Guard, with a focus on theselection and service of the Swiss Guard and its implications. The research includes the
history of the Swiss Guard, the qualifications and selection process, salaries and
benefits, and the different types of clothing and weapons for different situations. It also
describes the similarities and differences between legions in the Swiss Guard and those
in private military companies. The Swiss Guards are recruited from among men of Swiss
nationality who are Catholic. They must also enlist in the Swiss army and undergo 18
weeks of basic combat training. Once selected, they undergo two months of additional
training, and the basic contract lasts for 26 months. Swiss Guards are self-motivated
due to the low pay and high intensity of work. Recruited from the Catholic population,
they are motivated by their religious faith and loyalty to the Pope. They also tend to be
very conscious of their public image, with rules prohibiting them from marrying during
their contract and requiring them to wear black suits when on holiday abroad.
Additionally, they are responsible for guarding the Pope, and given the Vatican's status
as a global tourist destination, they are equipped with uniforms and weapons for a
variety of situations they may encounter. There are three key takeaways from this
research. First, organizations need to create a culture of inclusion and diversity. Second,
it is important to identify and develop self-motivators. Third, we need to equip
ourselves with the appropriate uniforms and weapons to prepare for a variety of
situations.
