This study explores how the application of core Fourth Industrial Revolutiontechnologies—such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)—can revolutionize the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul
(MRO) framework for naval vessels. By integrating predictive maintenance and digital
twin-based process management into the existing workflows, the Naval Maintenance
Depot aims to achieve enhanced safety, productivity, and reliability. To substantiate these
goals, this research incorporates both literature reviews and comparative case analyses of
advanced MRO practices in leading defense industries. In addition, a survey was conducted
among personnel at the Naval Maintenance Depot to assess on-site perceptions and
readiness for digital transformation. The findings reveal a generally positive attitude toward
smart factory technologies, accompanied by anticipation of improved operational efficiency
and safety. However, critical issues—such as the need for stringent security protocols,
modernization of outdated facilities, and the development of specialized human resources—
were also identified. Overall, this study offers valuable insights for transitioning from
conventional, labor-intensive methods to a digitally driven MRO system in naval operations.
It further underscores the necessity of cohesive long-term defense policies and robust
public–private partnerships in effectively implementing advanced technology solutions
within the naval maintenance domain.
